First time in court....

Yesterday was my first hearing before a court since becoming a lawyer.

I represented juveniles while in law school, wrote briefs on behalf of clients for immigration clinic, and also participated in Innocence Project. I told myself that juvenile court was a lot worse, because at least dom rel orders are modifiable.

I mean, it has to be easier, right? RIGHT? (Right.)
So we get to the court yesterday morning all bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Wait for a couple of adoptions to go through. Then we go into the courtroom. First thing that struck me was there were no tables for plaintiff and defendant. Rather, they were pushed TOGETHER, so they would literally be staring each other in the eye.

So I turn to opposing counsel and ask if we can rearrange the furniture so that the benches are not pushed together. His reaction was something like this:

It proved to be fruitless anyway, because the judge hadn't taken TWO steps into the courtroom before stopping dead in his tracks and announcing that he couldn't hear the case because of a conflict. Apparently 4 out of the 5 judges in town have conflicts with opposing party in this case. The 5th is at Disney World. (Lucky duck.)

My almost-favorite part was when opposing counsel turned to his client and asked if the judge had represented him before (after the judge told him he had served as an ad litem attorney for his case). I looked at him exactly like he had looked at me....then slowly explained to both of them that attorneys ad litem represent CHILDREN (and the incapacitated which, given their sterling presence in the courtroom, maybe I can now see the rationale of asking him that question).

I say almost-favorite part because something even better happened. After all the conflicts were laid out before the court (and let me tell you, defendant is a WINNER), the bailiff looked at him, narrowed his eyes, and said "Oh yeah....I remember you now."

I NEED POPCORN.
Can't wait til next week. I'm past the want-to-vomit stage and have moved into the realm of Jerry Springer court in which I have settled into the whatever-the fuck-craziness-is-going-to-pop-up-is-gonna-happen-and-I-might-as-well-enjoy-it stage. CHEERS.

Cat Walk Wish

Cat Walk Wish

Wishes are created for good things. Wishes are not meant to overcome envy.

That's the lesson I learned when I was in high school. A kind of experience that no one would ever forget brought me to that conclusion. ENVY is one of the seven deadly sins. I can say it is the most deadly of all. Comparing is the symptom of envy; and envy itself is the disease.

I studied in a private school. It was a good and ideal academy every child would like to be in. Teachers were great. They were patient in dealing with their students, and diligent in feeding the knowledge they would like to share to children. The buildings were also great. The ambiance is very pleasing. The field was full of green grass, and you often see students enjoying companionship and playing games to utilize time. I was always staring this attractive view from the window in the fourth floor of the main building.

Well, like other schools in the whole world, folklores and urban legends exist to complete the ingredients of being an unforgettable alma mater. I remember that stairway in the old garden at the back of the main building of my school which we called "cat walk" - that thirty series of steps with an antiquely look at first glance. It was said that whoever climbs up that stairs with eyes closed counting from one to thirty and you got the thirty first-step, your wish will be granted after saying this chant four times: “Cat O Cat. I know you are here. Please grant me the wish I always wanted to get."

I didn't actually believe in that lore. Only dumb people would accept it as true.

The Terrible Pig Headed Specter of Pigman Bridge

While visiting Georgia this week,  I happened upon the delightful tale of  Pigman Bridge in Hawkensville, Georgia.  This particular story is about a bridge on Holland Road that has acquired the name Pigman Bridge.  Urban legends and ghost stories about this area abound.   It is a narrow stretch of road that meanders through tunnels and over bridges.

The first story I heard about the bridge seems too fantastic to be true, but I've been proven wrong in my assumptions before, so who knows?  I found this tale on the Paranormal and Ghost Society web page.  According to this site,  there once was a rather unpleasant fellow who lived in this area.  He liked to cut off the heads of pigs and put them on spikes around his house to scare away strangers.  Some curious boys decided that the pigs weren't that scary and went exploring on his property.  They were also decapitated and their heads were mounted on spikes next to the pigs.  My guess is that this scared away all strangers after.  Of course, it didn't make the townspeople happy and they hunted the pigman down and killed him on Pigman Bridge.  His ghost still haunts the bridge today.  He has the body of a man and the head of a pig.

Another story is far more prevalent.  In this permutation of the tale,  an animal trainer from the circus lived in the area.  He specialized in training pigs.   He lived happily with his pigs until they went crazy and killed him by the bridge that bares his name.

Other tales describe a train wreck that killed over 40 people and left the bridge forever tainted by the blood of the innocents that died in the wreck.

Whatever its origin, many people who visit Pigman Bridge describe seeing the specter of a pigman roaming the shadowy night by the area.   Some people even describe being chased or harassed by this monstrous ghost.   I find this particular ghost story intriguing on two levels, first it is just an interesting story.  Mad pigmen roaming the night are always interesting.  Second,  this story resembles another piece of ghostly folklore I love.  It resembles crybaby bridge.  Stories of crybaby bridges appear in every state and almost every county.  One county in Alabama has two separate crybaby bridges that both have different legends.   Likewise,  Angola, New York also has a Pigman Road with a pigman ghost and so does Millington, Tennessee.   This particular phantom seems to know many lonely bridges.   Perhaps lonely pigmen haunt bridges all over the nation waiting for unfortunate souls to cross their paths.
